The Enid Police Department has released more information on yesterday’s incident that saw an erratic driver, run over a street sign, and blow all 4 tires before his engine caught fire. Mathew Nelson, age 36 was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, duty upon striking fixtures on the highway, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Around 4:30 pm yesterday police responded to a call about a reckless driver in a gold SUV who was swerving on and off the road and into oncoming traffic with 4 blown tires. Police later found Nelson still driving and initiated a traffic stop near 28th and Chestnut.

Police noted Nelson was struggling to keep his balance and had constricted and watery pupils. Nelson also had an odor of alcohol and was placed under arrest for the above charges. Officers wanted to issue a blood test but Nelson refused.

While transporting Nelson, the arresting officer struggled to understand Nelson, saying in his report that he “continued to speak in what sounded to me like gibberish”. Nelson was then processed at the Garfield County Detention Facility.
