Enid Police Department Warns Public About Impaired Driving

SHARE NOW

The Enid Police Department made a statement regarding the effects and consequences of impaired driving.

Driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, opioids, methamphetamines or any impairing drug prescribed over the counter can lead to terrible consequences. Driving while impaired puts you and others in harm’s way. In a 2020 study, 56% of drivers involved in a car crash tested positive for at least one of the aforementioned substances.

Alcohol, marijuana and other drugs slow down coordination, judgment and reaction time. Cocaine and methamphetamine can make drivers more aggressive and reckless. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medicines can cause drowsiness, dizziness and other side effects while driving. Mixing any of the drugs can amplify the impairing effects to a severe degree if taken in close proximity.

If you feel different, you drive differently. Law enforcement is trained to identify impaired drivers. Be responsible and do not drive while under the influence. The charge can reach up to one year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine.

Plan ahead for a sober driver if you plan on using an impairing drug. If you’re hosting a party where alcohol or other substances will be used, it’s your job to ensure everyone has a sober driver.

The best defense against impaired drivers is your seatbelt. Always buckle up before driving off.
