The Gaslight Theatre put out the following press release:

Savage in Limbo is a 1984 “concert play” by American playwright John Patrick Shanley, following four wayward souls who frequent a seedy bar by the name of “Scales.” This was Mr. Shanley’s third work, opening at Gate Theatre, London, just three years before his Academy Award winner “Moonstruck,” and 20 years before his Pulitzer and Tony award winner, “Doubt: A Parable” (which graced the stage of Gaslight Theatre in 2014).

Savage in Limbo is director Chad Swanson’s second project in the Turpin at Gaslight, following his 2021 directorial debut with “War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast.” Chad stated, “I’m a proponent of the power and intimacy to be found in true black box theatre, and we are fortunate to have such a wonderful venue in the Turpin.”

Denise Savage (Charlet Ringwald) arrives at “Scales” on a Monday night, looking to find something, or someone, to fill an emptiness in her heart. She encounters her grade school pal Linda Rotunda (Katie Pearce), who is on the outs with her boyfriend Tony Aronica (Evan Chermack), as he wants to start seeing “ugly girls.”

Rounding out the cast is April White (Bailey Wilson), a failed nun kept in a permanent haze by the enigmatic owner and barkeep of “Scales,” a man who only goes by the name of Murk (Alex Johnson).

Savage in Limbo is themed around isolation, self-actualization, and taking responsibility for one’s actions, told with blistering pace and a dynamic rhythm of dialogue. According to Swanson, “This ‘concert play’ sings through its words. It puts forth the idea that when people show you who they truly are, you should believe them.”
