Two Israeli reservists, Capt. Eitan Koplovich and Warrant Officer Elon Weiss, were killed in a tank attack in northern Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced. Their deaths bring the total number of Israeli troops killed in the ground offensive against Hamas to 311. The tank attack also seriously wounded two other soldiers.
Additionally, the IDF released the names of five combat engineers killed in a blast in southern Gaza’s Rafah. The soldiers were identified as Sgt. Eliyahu Moshe Zimbalist, Sgt. Itay Amar, Sgt. Stanislav Kostarev, Sgt. Or Blumovitz, and Sgt. Oz Yeshaya Gruber. The blast, which hit a Namer armored combat engineering vehicle, resulted in the deadliest incident for the military in Gaza in six months.
Separately, Sgt. Yair Roitman, who was seriously wounded earlier in the week in Rafah, succumbed to his injuries.
The conflict in Gaza began on October 7 when Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza claims over 37,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, though this figure has not been independently verified. Israel reports killing approximately 15,000 combatants.
Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas and dismantle its military and governing capabilities. Meanwhile, indirect negotiations are ongoing for an extended truce and the release of 116 hostages still held by Hamas, as well as the bodies of two IDF soldiers killed in 2014.
