Biden Threatens to Cut Military Aid to Israel Over Potential Gaza Invasion

By The Media Line Staff

President Joe Biden announced that the United States would withhold military support to Israel if its forces proceed with a major invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza. This statement comes amid ongoing negotiations in Cairo aimed at establishing a cease-fire in the region. The president’s firm stance was revealed during a CNN interview, where he emphasized, “I made it clear that if they go into Rafah, … I’m not supplying the weapons.” This declaration marks a notable departure from previous US positions, as Biden acknowledged the use of American-supplied weapons in operations that have resulted in civilian casualties in Gaza.

The ongoing offensive, which has lasted seven months and aims at dismantling Hamas, has led to widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Despite the pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that operations in Rafah will continue, asserting the necessity of targeting Hamas combatants allegedly concentrated in the area. This military strategy has not only involved tank and aerial strikes but also the use of precision-guided munitions, which have been under scrutiny due to their impact on civilian areas.

The situation is further complicated by internal pressures on Biden from within his own party and from public protests, especially from college campuses, urging him to take a stand against the invasion of Rafah. These developments occur as Biden seeks re-election, with his administration’s support of Israel turning into a contentious issue.
