US Military Downs Four Houthi Drones off Yemeni Coast

The United States military announced Wednesday evening that it had destroyed four attack drones fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels at a Navy warship sailing in the Red Sea. In a statement posted to social media platform X, US Central Command reported that its forces had “engaged and destroyed four long-range unmanned aerial systems” between 2:00 a.m. and 2:20 a.m. local time.
The post referred to the attack as having been “launched by Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists in Yemen” and noted that no damage or injuries were caused because of the attack. The statement added, “It was determined these weapons presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region. These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for US Navy and merchant vessels.”
In November of last year, the Houthis, an Iran-aligned Shia insurgent group, launched a campaign against Israeli and Israel-bound ships traversing the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Since then, the militia, which controls a large swath of western Yemen, including the capital of Sana’a, has seized multiple civilian ships and launched countless missile and drone attacks into the waterway.
In response, the US and its allies formed a broad naval coalition to counter Houthi actions and protect the critical trade corridor. Both the US and UK have executed strikes against Houthi military infrastructure in Yemen.
